Dr. Daniel Carlo is the Executive Product Manager at Burkart Flutes & Piccolos, where he combines his passion for fine instrument craftsmanship with the dynamic responsibilities of product development and employee ownership. Since joining Burkart in 2017, he has played an active role in shaping the company’s instruments, ensuring they uphold the highest standards of artistry and precision. He works closely with flute and piccolo players of all levels, helping them find instruments that amplify their artistry and voice.
Dr. Carlo holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University, where he studied with Carol Wincenc. During his time at SBU, his research focused on the piccolo’s role in Beethoven’s orchestral works as well as flute sonatas of the late 19th Century. Previously, he earned a performance degree from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Over the years, his playing has earned awards in multiple competitions, including the Rochester Flute Association Emerging Artist Competition, the Raleigh Area Flute Associate Artist Competition, the Upper Midwest Flute Association Young Artist Competition, and the National Society of Arts and Letters Woodwind Competition.
A vital part of his work at Burkart, Dr. Carlo travels as a clinician and educator, giving masterclasses and workshops at prestigious institutions across the United States, Canada, and Europe. He remains deeply grateful to his former teachers, including Carol Wincenc, Thomas Robertello, and Jennie Brown, for their guidance and inspiration throughout his career.
